BELIEVE IN MIRACLES: MOTOWN LEGEND SMOKEY ROBINSON
HEADLINES QUICK CHEK NEW JERSEY FESTIVAL OF BALLOONING JULY 28
READINGTON, NJ --- Legendary singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson will headline the Quick Chek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning in Association with PNC Bank at Solberg Airport in Readington, NJ on Saturday, July 28.
Once pronounced by Bob Dylan as America’s greatest living poet, Robinson’s career spans over four decades of hits. He has received numerous awards including the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts Award from President George W. Bush. He has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. They were Berry Gordy’s first vocal group, and it was at Robinson’s suggestion that Gordy started what would become the Motown Record dynasty.
Robinson’s “Shop Around” became Motown’s first #1 hit on the R&B singles chart. He followed that with hits including “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” “Going to a Go-Go,” “More Love,” “Tears of a Clown” (co-written with Stevie Wonder), and “I Second That Emotion.”
The Miracles dominated the R&B scene throughout the 1960s and early ‘70s and Robinson became Vice President of Motown Records, serving as in-house producer, talent scout and songwriter.
“Through an unprecedented 50-year career, Smokey Robinson continues to thrill audiences around the world,” said Festival Executive Producer Howard Freeman. “We’re excited to present a true living legend. His music is timeless and he continues to perform at a level that is going to wow our Festival goers this summer.”
Robinson has amassed more than 4,000 songs to his credit, writing and producing hits for other Motown greats including The Temptations, Mary Wells, and Marvin Gaye. These include “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Get Ready,” “Don’t Mess with Bill,” and “My Guy.”
The Beatles recorded his “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” in 1963 and The Rolling Stones covered “Going To A Go-Go” in 1982.
Presented by AT&T, Robinson performs Saturday, July 28 at 8:00 p.m., following that evening’s mass hot air balloon ascension and in conjunction with the Festival’s spectacular nighttime hot air balloon glow.
Named one of the Top 100 Events in North America five times by the ABA and the No. 1 Thing to Do in New Jersey in 2012 by New Jersey Monthly magazine, the three-day festival at Solberg Airport in Readington, July 27-28-29, is the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America. Upwards of 165,000 people are expected.
Tickets for Smokey Robinson include admission into the 30th annual Quick Chek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning in Association with PNC Bank and lawn seating for the concert.
